Happy National Ice Cream Day

National Ice Cream Month is celebrated in July.  It's just one more reason July is my favorite month of the year.  National Ice Cream Month was designated by President Ronald Reagan in July 1984.  Who ever said Republicans never do anything right?  To make the month even better, the third Sunday of the month is National Ice Cream Day.  Hooray!

So let's just say I have a few ice cream related cookie cutters.  What better way to celebrate National Ice Cream Day then with some ice cream cookie cutters?  I made a few of each of them for fun.  I wanted a color palette that was fun but not too bright.  I love using the website Design-Seeds when I need to find a color palette.  For the ice cream cookies, I chose this color palette.  I "eyeballed" the coloring for the icing.  The icing is never an exact match but that is fine with me.

I feel that ice cream cone cookies are some of the simplest cookies to make.  The cone part is either a square or triangle filled in with one icing color.  For many of the cookies I didn't add the criss-crossing lines, making it less work intensive to make.  For the ice cream part of the cookie, it doesn't have to be perfect.  Swirl the colors together, make dots, and have fun!  If you do make a mistake cover it with sprinkles.

When I was a kid my mom always purchased cake cones that were colored green, pink and brown.  The cones didn't have anything special other then the color, but when you're a kid a pink ice cream cone is a BIG deal.  I had to make some of these fun cones for National Ice Cream Day.  How did I do?  Does anyone else remember these ice cream cones?

My husband loves Drumsticks, so I had to try making some for him.  I stated with the cone part.  I pipped and flooded it with medium brown icing.  While still wet, I piped on the lines with tan icing.  I outlined the ice cream part with dark brown, adding the section where the white would go later.

I filled in the white icing first and let it dry.  I wanted to make sure the white and the cone were dry.  I did not want any nuts sticking to areas I didn't want them.  I let everything dry for a few hours.  Then I fill in the the rest of the cone with dark brown.  I added some crushed hazelnuts to the icing while it was still wet.  Hello drumsticks!

Nerd alert

Nerd alert

One of my favorite ice cream treats are these strawberry shortcake ice cream bars.  Oh they're so good!  I wanted to try replicating it with all the other ice cream cookies I was making.  After looking at the picture for awhile, it popped into my head.  NERDS!  But I didn't have red Nerds.  I only had pink from a rainbow pack and I had to pick out the pink ones from all the others.  I piped the shape of the ice cream bar.  Then I filled the "bite" part in with white and pink icing.  For the outer part of the bar, I filled it in with a combination of light pink and tan icing then swirled them around.  I sprinkled pink Nerds on the wet icing.  Once the icing had dried, I came back with the tan icing and added it in around the pink Nerds.

I wanted to make a pint of ice cream.  I didn't have a cookie cutter so I headed to my trusty Silhouette.  I found this shape.  I wanted to make a Cheetah Cookie-style ice cream.  I created a cheetah print with the different shades of brown icing.  I named the ice cream Cheetah Tracks.  I think it would be a chocolate ice cream with caramel and hazelnuts.  If you could create your own ice cream flavor what would it be and what would you name it?

I had to make a few ice cream sundaes too.  I love the cherries on top!

Finally I made an ice cream truck.  There is no better sound on a hot summer day then that of an ice cream truck.  This too came from a shape for my Silhouette.  You can find the shape here.  I followed the color scheme from the picture.  I piped the windows and tires first.  Once those sections were dry, I filled in the blue.  I let the truck dry overnight because it was such a large area.  The next day I added all the detail.  Now go out and enjoy some ice cream today!
